UPDATE ON MITHUN - December 2001

Mithun continues to enjoy complete cytogenetic remission (CCR). His October bone marrow biopsy results agan showed no leukemia cells by FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization, a process by which 200-300 cells are checked). The result from the highly sensitive pill PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method still show traces of the disease (0.011%)and he is continuing to take the miracle pill, Gleevec, a FDA approved drug now. When no leukemic (bcr-abl) cells are detected by this PCR method , he woul have reached molecular remission. We hope that this milestone will come soon.

We again thank God for leading us to Dr. Druker at Portland who made this break- through discovery. He showed that drugs could be targeted to attack and destroy leukemic cells only, without harming the normal cells. This targeted therapy eliminates severe side effects that occur with most cancer drugs and bone marrow transplant. This drug has been hailed as the biggest breakthrough in cancer.

Mithun is doing very well in school and in extracurricular activities. He will be taking his drivers Ed during this Christmas break. He can't wait to get his Drivers License!! Our next visit to Portland will be in April for another bone marrow biopsy. We need to go to Portland every 6 months now, instead of every three months so far. We will keep you updated.

Even though Mithun may not need a bone marrow transplant any more, we continue to work towards adding more bone marrow donors to the National Registry for the sake of othr less fortunate cancer patients whose life depends on a bone marrow from a matched donor. Through our crisis, we have realized how important the Gift of Life is. Bone marrow, when donated to save a life, replenishes within 3-4 weeks, just like blood donation. Without a suitable HLA matched donor, the chanceof survival are slim for many cancer patients. Those of you who have not yet become a part of the registry, won't you please give it a serious consideration? You may be able to save a life.
